ASME Section VIII, Division 2, Part 5 (Design by Analysis)

Design by Analysis is a more rigorous analysis that utilizes FEA for both static and dynamic analysis of pressurized equipment. This is generally used when the geometry or the loadings on a pressurized equipment are such that the traditional design by rule methods are not sufficient to demonstrate code compliance. FEA is also used when the pressurized equipment requires fatigue analysis.
